Yuletide Festival

Each year City Garden is transformed into a beautiful winter wonderland complete with a tree, candle-dipping, and yummy treats for the Yuletide Festival.  The Urban Prairie community is encouraged to attend, and we need your help!

It takes a village to make a great celebration — help out by volunteering or donating baked goods, pretzels and other items.  Sign Up Here to donate items or your time. Questions? Contact Claudia Berg.

The Festival will be held at City Garden Early Childhood, 920 W. 19th Street. See you there!

LIFT UP - Parent Council Community Service Gathering

Parent Council is holding a community service gathering in lieu of its regular meeting. Stay tuned for details.

Monday, December 18
5:30 - 6:30pm
Community Advent Spiral

This is a quiet festival to celebrate the human being’s individual striving to carry the light in these days of darkness. Individuals walk the spiral garden of greens and candles until they can light their own candle on the large one in the middle. They then leave their light along the path for others to follow.

This year’s festival will be a bit different than it has been in the past. You and your family are welcome to come walk the spiral anytime between 5:30 and 6:30. Due to this “revolving door,” we ask that entry and participation be silent in order to keep the reverent mood of the festival.

All students will walk the spiral during the school day.

Wednesday, December 20
5:30 - 7:00pm
The Shepherds' Play

The Shepherds’ Play is a Waldorf school tradition.  This year, it is brought to us by the Christian Community Church with a little help from some of our very own Urban Prairie faculty.  The play is a warm-hearted nativity folk comedy about the shepherds who travel to see the newborn Christ-child. It originated as a medieval mystery play on the little island of Oberufer on the Danube.  Part of the fun of the play is that faculty vehemently deny that they are cast members, leaving the children to wonder and guess who might be playing whom!

Festival of Light (NEW)

Don’t just pick up your student the last day before break, make it a celebration! Let’s end 2017 with light and joy and gather momentum for meeting 2018. Join us in the hall for singing and a story at 2:20pm. We’d love to have as many community members there as possible. Students will be officially dismissed at 3:00, and we invite you all to hang out for a bit to chat, sip tea, and munch on treats.
Important! Dismissal will begin at 3:00 instead of 2:30. There is no aftercare this day.

Tuesday, January 16

A Human Education for a Technological World (@ CWS)

Technology will present our children with serious challenges as they enter adulthood. Preparing them to meet those challenges and thrive in a digital world requires a conscious effort that starts in early childhood and progresses through the elementary and high school grades. This talk will explore several critical capacities that children must develop, and methods of helping them to do so.

Chip Weems will hold a lecture and workshop at the Chicago Waldorf School (1300 W Loyola Ave, 60626) that is open to all. Come prepared to learn, ask questions, and participate in a workshop.

Saturday, February 10
