LIBRARY CHECKOUT Starts This Week!

We need parent volunteers to help with Library Checkout, which occurs just about every other week starting today, October 3rd. Children come to check out books on Tuesdays, 12:50 – 1:45pm (6th); Wednesdays, 10:20 – 11:35 am (4th); Wednesdays, 12:15 – 1:45 pm (2nd and 5th); and Thursdays, 12:15 – 1:45 pm (3rd and 7th). This is a great way to foster Urban Prairie students’ love of reading while also getting to know the children a bit better. Please follow this link for the full schedule and contact Tara Hornell if you are interested in volunteering for book checkout or any other tasks related to the library.

New UPWS Calendar

UPWS has migrated the calendar to our database, BigSIS. You can now access it through your BigSIS Portal to view events and sync calendars to your Google calendar or iCalandar.

The public events calendar is accessible on the Urban Prairie website.

How to access calendars in your BigSIS Portal:

  • Visit: https://urbanprairie.bigsis.com/portal/
  • Click on the “Calendar” tab
  • To see events only applicable to your child’s grade, click on their grade along the top. (Note that you can view multiple grades at once.)
  • To sync calendars with your Google calendar or iCalendar click “Feeds,” where you will see buttons to sync individual calendars.
    • Note that each grade’s calendar is linked to the all-school calendar, so you do not need to sync the “UPWS Events” calendar in addition to individual grade calendars

We are working hard to get the calendars up to date; please help us out by informing us of edits or updates you notice.

Aftercare and Aftercare Contract

Don’t forget Thursday is early pickup day! If your child will need to stay after 2:30pm on Thursday, please fill out an aftercare contract. Aftercare is available every day after school.

The contract rate for aftercare is $8.00 per hour and the drop-in rate is $12.00 per hour.  The contract can be changed or cancelled at anytime. Please fill out the Aftercare_contract_2017-18 and return it to administration for annual discounted rate.

Any child who is at school after dismissal (3:40 p.m., 2:35pm on Thursday) will be sent to aftercare and the family will be billed in 15-minute increments until the child is picked up.

UPWS will provide children with a snack during aftercare.  The contract, questions, and / or any last minute, day of aftercare requests can be sent to aftercare@urbanprairie.org

Return Clean Dishes and Linens

Please deliver your clean dishes and linens directly to Sophie Huckabay in the front office. This way, we can track what has been returned and make sure everything gets back to its right home. Thank you so much for your help! Questions? Contact Alison Welch.

Sign U(rban) P(rairie): Committee Members and Class Delegates Sought for Parent Council

Are you interested in helping in a small or big way with the many ways parents can connect with and collaborate with the school? Please follow this link to indicate your interest in participating in our Parent Council Committees or as a Class Delegate for your grade.  It truly takes a village and as parents we know you can find the way to contribute that is a win-win for you and your family. Questions? Contact Alison Welch or Briana Villarrubia, Parent Council Co-Chairs.

Fundraising Corner
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the first fundraising table such a success, from setting up, volunteering, and cleaning up, to buying some items for your cupboard or front stoop! We made over $500 to start the year off well! We also thank all the parents who supported the Chicago Marathon with goodie bag stuffing and course flyering.

Since we can’t place orders for anything which has not been pre-paid (because that would put us in debt, which we cannot afford), all purchases made through Parent Council this year must be pre-paid. Sign up here to order Olea Estates Olive Oil direct from Greece, Modest Coffee whole or ground coffee beans (roasted in West Chicago!), Four Elements Tea from Baraboo, Wisconsin, or Beeswax Honey and Candles from Chicago Honey Coop. We need 12 bottles of olive oil ordered to get our first shipment, but the others are more locally sourced and arrive within 3 – 5 business days, once ordered. Questions? Contact ordertracking@urbanprairie.org.

Michaelmas Thank You!

Thank you to all parents who brought food for the feast and volunteered to serve, set up, clean up, or wash dishes/linens.  A special thanks goes out to Sarah Steedman, Briana Villarubia, Allison Welch, Jennifer Brennan, Dona Nishi, Alejandra Garcia, and Charles Blair who made chili for the whole school!  What a wonderful festival to kick off the Michaelmas season.
