First Friday Coffee

The October First Friday Coffee will be hosted by 2nd grade. Enjoy breakfast nibbles, Modest Coffee, and Four Elements Tea. Coffee, tea, olive oil, and beeswax candles will be available for purchase/pre-sale at great prices with proceeds going toward our $10k Parent Council fundraising goal. Questions? Contact Sarah Steedman, chair of our Food/Wellness Committee.

In order to avoid going into debt(!), all purchases made through Parent Council this year must be pre-paid. Sign up here to order Olea Estates Olive Oil direct from Greece, Modest Coffee whole or ground coffee beans (roasted in Wheeling!), Four Elements Tea from Baraboo, Wisconsin, or Beeswax Honey and Candles from Chicago Honey Coop. We need 12 bottles of olive oil ordered to get our first shipment, but the others are more locally sourced and arrive within 3 – 5 business days, once ordered. Questions? Contact ordertracking@urbanprairie.org.

Aftercare and Aftercare Contract

Don’t forget Thursday is early pickup day! If your child will need to stay after 2:30pm on Thursday, please fill out an aftercare contract. Aftercare is available every day after school.

The contract rate for aftercare is $8.00 per hour and the drop-in rate is $12.00 per hour.  The contract can be changed or cancelled at anytime. Please fill out the Aftercare_contract_2017-18 and return it to administration for annual discounted rate.

Any child who is at school after dismissal (3:40 p.m., 2:35pm on Thursday) will be sent to aftercare and the family will be billed in 15-minute increments until the child is picked up.

UPWS will provide children with a snack during aftercare.  The contract, questions, and / or any last minute, day of aftercare requests can be sent to aftercare@urbanprairie.org

Curious Corner   (1)
Does UPWS celebrate Day of the Dead?

Each year on November 1, Señor Flannery leads the students in a celebration of the traditional Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos.  During this festive occasion, we remember loved ones who have passed away by decorating an ofrenda, singing songs, and hearing stories.  Stay tuned for more details from Señor Flannery and your class teacher.

Seeking a Volunteer with Finance Background
If you or someone you know has a background in finance and/or accounting and wants to be a part of the Waldorf High School working group, please contact Liz Winfield, Board Secretary.
We meet the first Wednesday of each month from 7 – 9pm, and this role would include filing appropriate annual documentation with the IRS as well as working with the development committee to create a strategic financial plan for the Waldorf High School.
Library Corner: Pages of Gratitude

Thank you to the parents who ensured our first library book checkout week was a success. Second graders were delighted by their first opportunity to check out books they’ve walked by for over a year. Fourth through seventh graders also enjoyed browsing and selecting from our collection of more than 2,000 fiction and nonfiction books. (Third grade was on the field trip.) Want to be a part of the parent-run library team? Contact Tara Hornell, chair of our Library Committee.

Thank you to the Joslin Family!

Ben Joslin very carefully packed and moved an entire kiln that was kindly donated by his mother for our new space at Montefiore!
