Our Vision

  • We envision Urban Prairie Waldorf School at the leading edge of Waldorf education in America.
  • We innovate on the ideas of Rudolf Steiner and contemporary pedagogical philosophy to build an educational program that is developmentally engaging, meets the here and now, and prepares our students for an ever-changing future.
  • Our school is a magnet for seekers and doers, who build a close-knit community that is diverse yet connected by shared ideals. We are intentional, accessible, and collaborative. Our relationships are deep and meaningful.
  • Our campus is in harmony with our surroundings and emphasizes ecological and societal awareness.
  • Our education contains the seeds for social transformation.

No fundraising. No hidden agenda. Just an opportunity to get to know other “real world” parents whose kids spend as much time with your kids as you do.  We welcome non-UPWS parents too so invite those jealous co-workers to find out what Waldorf is all about.

Please RSVP by next Wednesday, March 12:    david_stewart@mckinsey.com.  A location will be selected based on total attendees at a spot in or near the loop for lunch.

Ways You Can Support Urban Prairie

Annual Fund donations

Annual Fund donations support the on going financial needs to operate and expand the school as we are still in our founding years.   Donations help fund items like: our 3rd floor remodel, a science lab for middle school, a counselor for middle school students and families, a specialized wood floor for the Eurythmy Room, additional support faculty and administration staff and continued support of our emergency fund.

Please click here to support the Annual Fund.

2013-2014 Spring Gala

Our Derby Day Gala is an evening to come together in support of our Tuition Assistance Program.  Our program supports families that value a high quality Waldorf education for their child but may not be able to meet the full tuition requirements. Urban Prairie’s Tuition Assistance Program allows us to build a vibrant, healthy and well-rounded community.

Please click here to purchase tickets to the Derby Day Gala.

Gifts in both areas enable our school to set a reasonable tuition, hire dedicated teachers, create beautiful classrooms where an integrated curriculum will unfold, and fulfill our mission to set our students on the path to grow into free-thinking, caring adults who can make meaningful contributions to society. Every gift is met with gratitude and appreciation.

Adopt-a-Beach 31st Street Beach Clean-Up
When: Saturday, April 26th, 9:30am-11:30am
Where: 31st Street Beach
Warm summer breezes and beach days are not far away!  We’re looking for UPWS families to join in a school-wide cleanup of 31st Street beach, home to UPWS summer beach Tuesdays.  Families with children of all ages can help.
With your help we will collect, sort and catalog trash, assess and measure the wind and current, take water samples, look for wildlife and complete other diagnostics. The information we collect helps the Alliance for the Great Lakes, a Chicago-based nonprofit, advocate for healthier beaches and cleaner water.  In the past, such data has helped secure smoking bans on Chicago Park District beaches and improve bacterial testing to make beach closings more accurate.
- RSVP to Beverly McClellan at bevmcclellan@gmail.com by April 21st.

UPWS can be an Angelic Organics CSA drop site
  • Have you been looking for a way to add more vegetables to your family’s diet?
  • Are you curious about biodynamic food and if it’s really better tasting?
  • Did the store where you get your CSA box recently close and you are looking for a CSA?
Urban Prairie is proud to announce that we can be a drop site for Angelic Organics if we sign up 20 customers by the end of March. After Friday, March 7th, we will open up the sign up to community members, so sign up here.
When you sign up by 3/24/14 and use discount code Save4, you save 4%.
Curious as to what type of box you should order?
The Nishi’s and Ms. Vandermeulen got the half vegetable share last summer, and the food lasted for two weeks and was just the right amount for them. They also did the extended share until November and had some nice squash among other vegetables.
The Stewarts get the full share weekly box, which feeds their family of five and then some!

Angelic Organics is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) family farm that has been growing Biodynamic vegetables and herbs for people in the Chicago and North Central Illinois area since 1991. (We currently grow for over 1600 Shareholders/Customers.) We work directly with households like yours, without the intermediary of stores or wholesalers. This allows us to provide the freshest quality produce and the most competitive organic prices.

Beyond meeting the requirements of farming organically, we are committed to nurturing soils and plants to extraordinary health!  In 1993, this goal led us to adopt Biodynamic farming practices, which enhance both the substance and the forces in food. Learn more about our Biodynamic program.
