Parent Education Study on Adolescence Featuring Brain Development Speaker

It’s not all just raging hormones and teenage doom and gloom! Our study group on adolescence continues April 5 from 10-11:30 am, featuring clinical psychologist John Ardizzone (Dona Nishi’s father, grandfather to Nora, 3rd, and Hana, incoming 1st) who will help us to see the positive aspects of the changes in the brain from early adolescence on.  And, technically speaking, the adolescent brain may be coming your way sooner than you think—changes begin as early as 10!

We will also discuss Part 3 (pp. 191-245) of Between Form and Freedom: A Practical Guide to the Teenage Years.  All are welcome and bring any and all questions you have!  Please RSVP, including childcare needs, at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0E48ABA92BA5FA7-upws.

ONLINE FORUM FOR ALL: We are creating a web discussion forum to share resources and insights amongst all parents, even if they can’t attend study group.  Please email Beverly McClellan at bevmcclellan@gmail.com to participate.

Parking is open from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Ways You Can Support Urban Prairie

Annual Fund donations

Annual Fund donations support the on going financial needs to operate and expand the school as we are still in our founding years.   Donations help fund items like: our 3rd floor remodel, a science lab for middle school, a counselor for middle school students and families, a specialized wood floor for the Eurythmy Room, additional support faculty and administration staff and continued support of our emergency fund.

Please click here to support the Annual Fund.

2013-2014 Spring Gala

Our Derby Day Gala is an evening to come together in support of our Tuition Assistance Program.  Our program supports families that value a high quality Waldorf education for their child but may not be able to meet the full tuition requirements. Urban Prairie’s Tuition Assistance Program allows us to build a vibrant, healthy and well-rounded community.

Please click here to purchase tickets to the Derby Day Gala.

Gifts in both areas enable our school to set a reasonable tuition, hire dedicated teachers, create beautiful classrooms where an integrated curriculum will unfold, and fulfill our mission to set our students on the path to grow into free-thinking, caring adults who can make meaningful contributions to society. Every gift is met with gratitude and appreciation.

Adopt-a-Beach 31st Street Beach Clean-Up
When: Saturday, April 26th, 9:30am-11:30am
Where: 31st Street Beach
Warm summer breezes and beach days are not far away!  We’re looking for UPWS families to join in a school-wide cleanup of 31st Street beach, home to UPWS summer beach Tuesdays.  Families with children of all ages can help.
With your help we will collect, sort and catalog trash, assess and measure the wind and current, take water samples, look for wildlife and complete other diagnostics. The information we collect helps the Alliance for the Great Lakes, a Chicago-based nonprofit, advocate for healthier beaches and cleaner water.  In the past, such data has helped secure smoking bans on Chicago Park District beaches and improve bacterial testing to make beach closings more accurate.
- RSVP to Beverly McClellan at bevmcclellan@gmail.com by April 21st.
Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher appreciation week is fast approaching. If you are interested in coordinating the week with other parents to show the teachers how much we appreciate their hard work and sacrifice, please email volunteer@urbanprairie.org

UPWS can be an Angelic Organics CSA drop site

Thank you to all the families who have signed up for full or half shares this summer! With the snow melting, we’ll begin to get updates on the planting Farmer Tom and his crew do, as well as what delicious fruits and vegetables we can look forward to.

Within three days, our community was able to triple our total number of shares to 6.5! Go Us!! Right now we have 6.5 shares towards the 20 full shares needed to become a drop site. Every little bit helps, so keep spreading the word!
The delivery date for UPWS would be Wednesday mornings, and if you get your check postmarked to Angelic by next Monday, 3/24/14, you’ll still get the 4% off.
And next fall, when they offer the shares again, they will be at an even steeper discount, so consider this year a deposit on all the yummy vegetables you’ll be getting for years to come.
Finally, we’ll be hosting a few canning and preserving workshops this summer, as well as an extras box, so if you really can’t stand eggplant as much as I can’t, we can learn of other ways to prepare it, or leave it for others who might love it but hate cucumbers (the horror!)
